On April 13, 2017, Chuck “Sonic” Carroll, after having been dizzy and short of breath, visited Cape Coral ER. His troponin levels were high, indicative of a heart attack. Doctors planned to transfer him to Health Park, where they would perform a heart cath the following morning. But just a few hours later Chuck took a turn for the worse. He was transferred immediately, going directly to the cath lab. The results were scary… Every one of his coronary arteries were clogged – 100% blockage in two, and 90% in the other. He was on bi-pap to help him breath and push out the fluids. He was unstable.
The big hope was for enough improvement so Chuck could undergo a quadruple bypass the following Monday, The only other option? A heart transplant. During the next day, Chuck was intubated and sedated so his body could get the rest it needed.
There have been lots of ups and downs since Chuck’s initial diagnosis. He is currently in Tampa, undergoing tests to determine the best line of treatment. His family, including his wife, mother and siblings, are making sure someone is always by his side.
Chuck is a 49-year-old veteran with a wife and two children who has called Cape Coral his home for the past 46 years. He likely will never be able to work again.
It’s time for us – the community – to jump in and lend a hand.
